What is Maintain Type KPI

A Maintain Type KPI (Key Performance Indicator) is a performance metric designed to track and optimize processes by ensuring values stay within a specific target range, rather than solely maximizing or minimizing them.

This approach promotes sustainable and balanced performance by allowing organizations to define acceptable thresholds for metrics. The enhancement to the KPI tracking feature introduces three maintain types:

  • At Least: Ensures the KPI value meets or exceeds a minimum threshold (e.g., maintaining at least 90% customer satisfaction).
  • At Most: Ensures the KPI value does not exceed a maximum threshold (e.g., keeping error rates at most 2%).
  • Range (In Between): Ensures the KPI value stays within a defined upper and lower bound (e.g., maintaining inventory levels between 100 and 150 units).

This flexibility enables organizations to tailor performance measurement to specific goals, optimizing processes while maintaining stability and balance.

Here are some specific examples of how maintain KPIs can be used:

  • Manufacturing:

KPI: Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE)

At Least: Achieve an OEE of 90% or higher.

At Most: Aim for less than 10% downtime.

Range in between: Strive for an OEE within the range of 85% to 95%.

  • Retail:

KPI: Gross Profit Margin

At Least: Increase gross profit margin to 25% or higher.

At Most: Minimize costs to achieve a gross profit margin of at least 20%.

Range in between: Maintain a gross profit margin between 20% and 25%.

  • Healthcare:

KPI: Patient Satisfaction Score

At Least: Aim for a patient satisfaction score of 90% or above.

At Most: Minimize patient dissatisfaction, targeting a score below 10%.

Range in between: Maintain a patient satisfaction score between 85% and 95%.

  • Finance:

KPI: Risk-Adjusted Return on Capital (RAROC)

At Least: Achieve a RAROC of 15% or higher.

At Most: Minimize risk to maintain a RAROC above 12%.

Range in between: Maintain a balance with a RAROC between 12% and 15%.

  • Information Technology:

KPI: Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)

At Least: Increase MTBF to 100,000 hours or more.

At Most: Minimize time between failures to less than 5,000 hours.

Range in between: Maintain an MTBF between 50,000 and 100,000 hours.

  • Customer Service:

KPI: First Contact Resolution Rate

At Least: Achieve a first contact resolution rate of 80% or higher.

At Most: Minimize repeat contacts to below 10%.

Range in between: Maintain a first contact resolution rate between 75% and 85%.

  • Education:

KPI: Student Retention Rate

At Least: Aim for a student retention rate of 90% or above.

At Most: Minimize dropout rates to less than 5%.

Range in between: Maintain a student retention rate between 85% and 95%.

  • Transportation:

KPI: Fuel Efficiency (Miles per Gallon)

At Least: Achieve a fuel efficiency of 30 miles per gallon or higher.

At Most: Minimize fuel consumption to less than 10 gallons per 100 miles.

Range in between: Maintain a fuel efficiency between 20 and 30 miles per gallon.

  • Energy:

KPI: Renewable Energy Share

At Least: Increase the share of renewable energy to 50% or more.

At Most: Minimize reliance on non-renewable sources to less than 20%.

Range in between: Maintain a balanced energy mix with renewables between 40% and 50%.

  • Telecommunications:

KPI: Network Latency

At Least: Achieve a network latency of 20 milliseconds or lower.

At Most: Minimize latency to less than 5 milliseconds.

Telecommunication

Range in between: Maintain network latency between 10 and 20 milliseconds.
